Email Alias Manager Retirement Plans
BYU will retire the Email Alias Manager (EAM) service to improve email security and simplify email management. Many BYU email aliases will be moved to Exchange/Outlook, while others will be retired. For information on how this change may affect you and how to prepare, see Email Alias Manager Retirement: What You Need to Know.
Tentative Schedule
The schedule below is subject to change. Communications will be sent to affected individuals and email addresses before major changes take effect.
Definitions: In many cases, we can refer to things as either addresses or aliases. To avoid confusion between the systems, the table below refers to aliases managed in the old Email Alias Manager service as EAM aliases and aliases in Outlook/Exchange as Exchange addresses (though they can also be called aliases).
Last updated October 14, 2026.
| Date | Expected Change | Effects |
| June 2026 | Disable creation of @byu.net aliases | No new @byu.net aliases can be created. Existing aliases are unaffected. |
| August 2026 | Launch the EAM replacement site at emailmanager.byu.edu. | The new site shows a person's Exchange addresses and their EAM aliases. |
| October 2026 | Delete EAM aliases that are duplicates of Exchange addresses. | No visible effect. |
| November 2026 | Replace the old EAM site with the new site. | The new site will be available at alias.byu.edu and will retain most of the old site's features along with the new Exchange visibility. Users will need to submit a form to add new Exchange addresses. |
| November 2026 | Disable creating new EAM aliases. | Existing EAM aliases will still be editable, but new addresses will be created in Exchange. |
| November 2026 | Move EAM aliases that forward to an individual's Exchange mailbox to Exchange. | Some aliases will no longer be visible in EAM, but will be visible on the main page of the new site. |
| Early 2027 | Move EAM aliases for shared and resource mailboxes to Exchange | People who manage shared mailboxes will see a list of the shared addresses they manage on the new site. |
| Early 2027 | Move EAM aliases that send to multiple addresses to Exchange | Sending to multiple people via one email address will be managed through Microsoft groups and distribution lists. |
| 2027 | Move or retire EAM aliases that send to addresses outside the university | (Note: We still have work to do to determine whether all of these should migrate or if some should be retired.) |
| Later 2027 or 2028 | Retired the EAM service | All EAM aliases will have been migrated or removed by this point. |
